Job outlook data

Kindergarten and elementary school teachers held around 1.5 million jobs in 2014, the last year for which data are available, while special education teachers held around 450,000 jobs. Employment of kindergarten, elementary school and special education teachers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2014 to 2024.

The number of students enrolling in kindergarten and elementary schools is expected to increase over the coming decade, and the number of classes needed to accommodate these students will also rise. Although enrollment in special education programs has diminished slightly around the country, better screening and identification of disabilities in children will increase the demand for special education services. Children with disabilities are being identified and enrolled into special education programs earlier than before.

Inclusive education programs provide educational services for all students, including those with special needs, and serve all children in the regular classroom on a full-time basis. Extra services like speech therapy services are brought into the classroom. This program allows students using those services to remain in the regular education classroom setting at all times.
