Job Outlook Data

Job outlook data Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors held around 95,000 jobs in 2014, the last year for which data are available. Employment of substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors is projected to grow 22 percent from 2014 to 2024, driven by greater insurance coverage of addiction and mental health counseling services.

Federal health insurance reform has broadened the number of people who have access to health insurance; insurance is required by law to cover treatment for mental health disorders in the same way as other chronic diseases. This increases access to prevention and treatment services to those who were previously uninsured, did not have these services covered or found treatment too expensive. Mental health centers, hospitals and other treatment and counseling facilities will need to hire more counselors in order to meet the increased demand created by this broadened coverage.

Demand for substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors is also expected to increase as states seek treatment and counseling services for drug offenders rather than jail time.
