Job outlook data

Biochemists and biophysicists held around 34,000 jobs in 2014, the last year for which data are available. Employment of biochemists and biophysicists is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024.

As the large baby boom population ages and demand grows for new drugs and procedures to combat disease, biochemists and biophysicists involved in biomedical research will be in high demand. For example, biochemists will be needed to conduct genetic research and to develop new medicines and treatments that fight genetic disorders and diseases such as cancer. They will also be needed to develop new tests used to detect diseases and other illnesses.

Areas of research and development in biotechnology other than health such as alternative energy, genetically engineered crops and environmental preservation—will also provide employment growth for biochemists and biophysicists.
