Job seekers: Prepare a references a list.

Since employers may wish to check your references, prepare a list of three people who are familiar with your work (professors, supervisors, officials, co-workers, etc.).  Ask for their permission before putting anyone on the list.  Confirm the correct spelling of their name, and obtain their title, phone number and email address.  

While preparing a references page is wise, do not offer one to a prospective employerunless they specifically ask for one; neither should you automatically email one with your résumé at the beginning of a job search.  Including the phrase “references furnished upon request" on your résumé is not necessary, as you can probably use the space for something much more informative.  We recommend the format below.
