Environmental scientists and specialists held around 95,000 jobs in 2014, the last year for which data are available. Employment of environmental scientists and specialists is projected to grow 11 percent from 2014 to 2024.

Because governments at the state, county and local levels rely on environmental professionals to address concerns about water conservation, most employment growth in this area will be in professional, scientific and technical services. Requirements for the clean-up of contaminated sites will also increase demand for engineers, who help utilities and water treatment plants comply with developing environmental regulations.
