Medical records and health information technicians held around 189,000 jobs in 2014, the last year for which data are available. Employment of medical records and health information technicians is projected to grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024.

An aging population will require more medical services, and health information technicians will be needed to organize and manage these patients’ health information data. A greater number of people who have access to health insurance will also mean more claims for reimbursement from insurance companies.

The widespread use of electronic health records by healthcare providers will also lead to an increased need for technicians to organize and manage the associated information in all areas of the healthcare industry.
