Registered nurses held around 2.7 million jobs in 2014, the last year for which data are available. Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 16 percent from 2014 to 2024.
As the demand for healthcare services increases in connection with an aging population, nurses will be needed to care for older patients, particularly those with chronic conditions like arthritis, dementia, diabetes and obesity. Federal health insurance reform, which opens access to health insurance to many previously uninsured people, will also drive employment of nurses.
