Job outlook data

Registered nurses held around 2.7 million jobs in 2014, the last year for which data are available. Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 16 percent from 2014 to 2024.

As the large baby boom population ages, people remain active later in life and new medical technologies come into use, the healthcare industry will require more medical services. In particular, there is a growing need for managers and educators who organize medical information and teach healthcare staff.

Only 1 percent of nurses have a PhD, according to a 2011 report from the Institute of Medicine. A PhD in Nursing can prepare professionals for leadership in academic institutions, clinical settings, pharmacological companies and healthcare research organizations.
