Careers for Physical Education MA Program Graduates

The physical education major has special characteristics that will make you a valuable addition to prospective employers:

  • Understanding of the psychological factors involved in sports participation.
  • Capability to motivate people to increase their commitment to health enhancing behaviors.
  • Training to demonstrate proper participation of sports so as to decrease injuries, and increase health, teamwork, and self-confidence.
  • Ability to hold the attention of a group of students.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and instructional skills.
  • Advanced organizational, conflict resolution, and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of educational theory, teaching strategies, developmental theories, and techniques of discipline.

Job outlook data

High school teachers held around 962,000 jobs and middle school teachers held about 627,500 jobs, while elementary school teachers held about 1.5 million jobs in 2014, the last year for which data are available. From 2014 to 2024, employment is expected to grow by 8 percent for all education, training and library occupations, and by 6 percent for teachers at all levels of study.

A physical education teacher develops instructional plans that encourage physical activity in students ranging from kindergarten through college, which means they must able to maintain order, improve student learning and accommodate students of all abilities. In many schools, physical education teachers also are responsible for instructing classes in other topics, such as health or driver’s education.

Most high school teachers work in either public or private schools. Some teach in public magnet and charter schools, while others teach in private religious or secular schools.
